Pitt Applicants
Fellowship
Applicants must have fulltime, continuing appointments in the School of Arts and Sciences, in a department in the humanities or allied social sciences. Those selected as fellows will receive a minimum of one course released time for one semester, perhaps more if resources permit. Fellows have the option, as approved by their department chair, to buy out a second course through salary reduction. Fellows must reside in Pittsburgh and must agree to participate fully in the activities of the center during the tenure of their fellowship. Fellows will be appointed by the dean, as recommended by the center director, after consultation with the center’s advisory committee (comprising five tenured colleagues from Pitt humanities departments). Because a fellowship affects teaching assignments, those applying should alert their department chair.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: October 16, 2009 for the academic year 2010-11
We cannot accept materials before September 8, 2009.
Faculty Collaborative Research in the Humanities
The Humanities Center aims to foster research projects that bring together faculty from different departments and/or from different institutions. We seek collaboration that enriches our campus intellectual activity and leads to results that can be specified. We will not support purchase of equipment or travel from Pitt. We are happy to help facilitate colloquia, especially as part of ongoing exchange. To the extent that our funds permit, we offer two types of support:
- Smaller grants, maximum $2000. The organizer should submit a Cover Sheet with Budget, plus a narrative and proposal on the scale of 500 words, and not over 1000 words. Information should include: Who are the collaborators, what is the project, and what are the expected results.
- Larger grants, up to $5000, for projects that are also drawing on other sources of support. The organizer should first submit a Cover Sheet, Budget, narrative and proposal not over 1000 words, including also the intended other sources of support. For those proposals that seem possible for us to pursue, the Center will request further information.
DEADLINE: September 21, 2009, for projects to be funded Spring term, 2010; January 15, 2010, for projects to be funded in AY 2010-11.
